Technical Overview

6063 tube is the architectural hollow: it extrudes cleanly and anodises to a uniform colour next to 6063 sheet and 6063 bar. Schedule pipe in the same alloy is 6063 aluminium pipe. For a higher-strength structural tube, see 6082 tube and 6061 tube.

Standards: ASTM B221 and EN 755-2 / EN 755-8 as the usual extruded supply. ASTM B241 and ASTM B210 when the order calls for seamless or drawn tube. Designation: AA 6063, EN AW-6063, UNS A96063.

Usual tolerances: round OD ±0.25 mm, wall ±10% (not tighter than ±0.10 mm), square and rectangle outside ±0.30 mm, straightness ≤ 0.5 mm/m, twist ≤ 1.5 mm/m, cut length +2 / −0 mm. A tighter set, when ordered, is OD ±0.10 mm, wall ±0.10 mm, square outside ±0.15 mm, straightness ≤ 0.2 mm/m, cut length ±0.5 mm.

Round stock runs from 5/16 in OD × 1/16 in wall up to 8 in OD × 1/8 in wall, including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in. Square stock runs from 3/4 × 3/4 × 0.062 in to 6 × 6 × 1/8 in, commonly in 20 ft (240 in) lengths. Rectangle stock includes 1/2 × 1 × 1/8 in through 3 × 6 × 3/16 in, in T5 and T52.

Large-diameter tube is listed up to 500 mm (20 in) outside diameter.

T52 properties published for this tube: density 2.70 g/cm³, tensile 27,000 psi (186 MPa), yield 21,000 psi (145 MPa), fatigue 10,000 psi (69 MPa), shear 17,000 psi (117 MPa), melting range 1,140–1,210 °F (616–654 °C). These are typical for T52, not minima for every temper.
