Technical Overview

2017 bar is a heat-treatable aluminium-copper rod used for fittings, arms, and screw-machine parts. Cold-drawn tempers on the category list are T3, T351, T4, T451, T6, and T651. A grade listing adds T8.

T3 is solution treated and naturally aged. T4 is the same route at a higher strength, and it still forms. T6 is artificially aged. T8 is artificially aged and then cold worked. T451 is stretched after solution treatment so it moves less when it is machined.

A note published with this alloy says that above 125 °C its strength holds better than 7075. Corrosion resistance is poor unless the bar is clad or protected. Fusion welds crack readily. Resistance welding and rivets are the usual joints.
