Technical Overview

2014 is a high-strength aerospace forging alloy. Open-die and closed-die parts in this grade cover bars, balls, shafts, disks, gears, pipes, rings, and cubes. Airfoils, supports, connectors, wheels, and flight-control parts are the usual destinations. Hot tempers are T3, T4, T6, T651, and T6511. Alloy, shape, and size can follow the drawing.

Standards called up for these forgings include AMS 4133, AMS 4134, AMS 4120, AMS 4121, QQ-A-367, BS 2 L77, BS L 103, MIL-A-21180, and ISO 209-1.

The same alloy is also supplied as 2014 extruded tube and as 2014 T6 plate.

Why the forging is specified

  • Strength and stiffness stay high, including at elevated temperature, so the part can carry a high load.
  • It resists atmosphere, seawater, and oil.
  • It forges, extrudes, and draws into the shapes above.
  • Welds can be made with a high-strength joint.
  • Under a complex load the mechanical result stays reliable enough for airframe structure.

Landing-gear suspension brackets and legs use the bar because strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance sit together. Frames, fixtures, and support structure use it for the same reason.

Disks go into engine parts, airframe structure, chassis, hydraulics, propulsion hardware, and parachute hardware. Gas-turbine use includes compressor blades, turbine blades, and front turbine disks, where high-temperature behaviour and fatigue life matter.
